Izabela Matuła - soprano
She graduated in vocal performance and acting from the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Krakow, where she also pursued parallel studies in music theory, composition, and conducting. She further refined her craft through numerous vocal courses and masterclasses, later continuing her education with Neil Semer in New York. She currently hones her vocal technique under the guidance of Dariusz Grabowski.
A laureate of numerous international vocal competitions, her accolades include First Prize at the Deutsches Lied Wettbewerb – Sommerakademie Prague-Budapest-Wien, Second Prize at the Ada Sari International Vocal Art Competition, First Prize at Oper Schloss Laubach, and Third Prize at the Wilhelm Stenhammar International Singing Competition in Sweden. In 2009, she represented Poland as a semi-finalist in the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition.

The artist has a wide-ranging stage repertoire, with a particular focus on leading soprano roles in Italian opera. Her repertoire includes Aida (Kiel Opera House), Leonora in Il trovatore (Landestheater Linz, Nationaltheater Mannheim), Leonora in La forza del destino (Oper Frankfurt), as well as roles in Giuseppe Verdi’s Luisa Miller, Otello, Stiffelio and Un ballo in maschera. She has also performed as Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly, the title role in Tosca, Liù in Turandot, Suor Angelica and Mimì in La bohème by Giacomo Puccini. Her repertoire also includes Cherubini’s Médée, Catalani’s La Wally and a range of Mozart roles.
In the 2019/20 season, she made her debut at Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera in Warsaw as the title character in Stanisław Moniuszko’s Halka. In subsequent seasons, she returned to the company as Tosca and Madama Butterfly, as Leonora in La forza del destino, Tochter in Cardillac, in the title role of Barbara Radziwiłł, as Médée and as Abigaille in Nabucco.
In the 2022/23 season, she made her debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich as Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly, followed by her debut as Tosca at Grange Park Opera in Surrey and as the title character in Richard Strauss’s Salome at Staatstheater Mainz. In 2024, she performed as Tosca in Angers-Nantes, France, and as Liù in Turandot at the Baltic Opera Festival in Sopot. In 2025, she made her debut at Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf as Katerina Ismailova in Dmitri Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, followed in 2026 by her debut at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm as Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly.
She also specialises in German and Slavic repertoire, including works by Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Dvořák, Janáček, Smetana and Weinberger. The artist is also a regular performer of oratorio and concert repertoire, including Verdi’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Brahms’s A German Requiem, Dvořák’s Stabat Mater, Kilar’s Missa pro pace, Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 and Szymanowski’s Stabat Mater, as well as numerous works by Krzysztof Penderecki. She has performed at venues including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Konzerthaus Berlin, the National Philharmonic in Warsaw and Müpa Budapest. The artist is currently represented by IMG Artists in London.
